WEST GONJA HERNIA PROJECT 2010
A collaboration of GoodDoctors & Mustangh foundations
Current groin hernia
practice in Africa is characterized by emergency surgery with high morbidity
and mortality. The introduction of elective day-care groin hernia is thought to
decline morbidity and mortality rates; sustain productivity of individuals
(essential for income protection); and prevention of social out casting.
The West Gonja Hernia
Project is a collaboration of GoodDoctors & MUSTANGH foundations directed
to improve groin hernia treatment in Ghana on a local scale.
For structural
implementation of elective groin hernia surgery in Africa it is essential to
keep costs for the health care system and individual patients to a minimum.
This is established by day-care surgery (minimal costs for clinical admission)
and local anesthesia (no costs and risks of general anesthesia). The
introduction of mesh augmentated groin hernia surgery lowers the risk of hernia
recurrence to 5 a 10%. The costs for meshes are reduced substantially by using
sterilized mosquito-nets. Moreover, mesh augmentated groin hernia surgery by an
anterior approach (Lichtenstein procedure) has been shown to be easily learned
to and by African surgeons.
The West Gonja Hernia
Project depends on funding by partners. We are in search of these partners,
committed to improve the health care for patients in African countries such as
Ghana.
Are you, or is your
company/institution interested in funding this project, please contact one of
us through our website or by phone.
